From across two continents and 6 Indian states, a million phone calls and Zoom calls, and the undaunting spirit of strong women and girls refusing to back off from any challenge: This is what it’s taken to put together Shadhika’s Leaders for Change Summit.

With a week to go till we officially flag off the three-day Summit in Kolkata, it’s hard to find time to sit back and think about the magnitude of this event but it’s hard not to feel proud of the solidarity, compassion, leadership and happiness that have made this possible.

We return in person for the first Leaders for Change Summit in-country since 2019, after two years of virtual summits. The summit is an opportunity for the girls to participate in professional development, celebrate their achievements, and network to create relationships that will last a lifetime.

The Shadhika Scholars and Alum, our partner organizations, and the Shadhika Staff have much to look forward to this year- from focused sessions on job readiness, community leadership and more, to excursions for the Climate Change Initiative, and mental welbeing and self-care sessions through dance therapy, journaling, and art. We are also honored to have Ritambhara Mehta, the co-founder of Nazariya: A Queer Feminist Resource Group) and an accomplished queer feminist professional give the keynote speech.

In a world that expects women and girls to be seen and not heard, to shrink and not take up space (sometimes literally), such a celebration of personhood and leadership is not only important but necessary. Last year, Shadhika doubled the size of the Scholar cohort to be 70 strong- the most in Shadhika’s history. As we welcome new and increasing number of Scholars each year, the lessons we will learn and the stories we will gather from this Summit will be the legacy we pass on. We can’t wait to bring these stories to you, dear reader. Stay tuned from July 29 to 31 for more on the celebration of the spirit of courage, sisterhood, and perseverance.
