VACHA’s Right to Pee Campaign

According to the 2011 Indian census over 50 percent of Indian households do not have a toilet. Even worse, public toilets are few and far between and those that do exist charge a fee, making them out of reach for many. Lack of toilet facilities is not just a health problem, but also a safety issue for women. Shadhika grantee, VACHA, is participating with 37 other organizations in Mumbai in a “Right to Pee” campaign to ensure the city provides sufficient access to free and safe toilets for women. To date, the group has succeeded in making the local government announce that all toilets are free to women and they continue to put pressure on the government to provide more toilets throughout the city.
